First we send you a kit that includes a modified kréddle designed to hold impression foam. You get set up on your instrument and take two impressions of your jawline.

We use a 3D scanner to obtain a 3-dimensional computer model of your jaw-line impression. The accuracy of our scanner is approximately 1/3 the thickness of a human hair.

Next we spend hours moving your impression through a bunch of advanced computer modeling processes. We end up with a perfect 3D model negative of your jawline that will attach to the fully adjustable kréddle chin rest.

Then we carve your custom chin rest in a piece of fine flamed maple using a high precision 4-axis CNC machine. We use maple 1) because it's one of the safest woods for skin contact (unlike ebony and rosewood, which are infused with toxic chemicals), and 2) because violins and violas are made primarily from flamed maple.

We ship your completely custom and fully adjustable kréddle to you. We'll keep your 3D model on file for any future chin rest needs at a significant discount with code: CUSTOM2.

Why Maple?

Maple is one of the safest types of wood for skin contact. It is commonly used for cutting boards, and let's not forget we eat maple syrup. Conversely ebony and rosewood trees infuse their wood with irritating chemicals to protect themselves from parasites. These chemicals are not safe for skin contact. Anyone cutting ebony or rosewood needs to wear a respirator to prevent inhalation of the dust. Some hypothesize that the notorious "violin hicky" is caused by prolonged contact with the chemicals in ebony and rosewood. Flamed maple is beautiful. The backs, neck, and sides of all high end violins and violas are made from flamed maple. Given the toxic nature of ebony and rosewood, and the beauty and safety of maple, it seems only logical to use maple for our custom chin rests.

If you would like an appearance that approximates ebony or rosewood, you can select from various dyed maple colors. The stain/dye we use to finish the kréddle custom is also food safe. In fact it is FDA approved for food and skin contact. This combination of maple and dye provides unmatched beauty and skin-safe performance.
